Under the guidance of supervising professors and board-certified pathologists, you will gain hands-on experience across a wide range of clinical cases and build both your diagnostic skills and academic knowledge.<\/p><ul><li data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"673\"><strong data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"500\">Case Discussions<\/strong><br data-start=\"500\" data-end=\"503\" \/>Every morning, we review diagnostic cases using a multi-headed microscope and monitor, engaging in in-depth discussions to strengthen our clinical judgment and knowledge.<\/li><li data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"673\"><strong data-start=\"675\" data-end=\"696\">Oral Cancer Board<\/strong><br data-start=\"696\" data-end=\"699\" \/>We participate in multidisciplinary tumor board meetings with oral surgeons, radiologists, nurses, and other specialists. These meetings provide opportunities to contribute insights from an oral pathology perspective in the clinical management of oral cancer patients.<\/li><li data-start=\"969\" data-end=\"1265\"><strong data-start=\"969\" data-end=\"990\">Slide Conferences<\/strong><br data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"993\" \/>Graduate students regularly attend slide conferences hosted at the local (Hiroshima), regional (Chugoku\u2013Shikoku), and national levels by pathology and oral pathology societies. These are valuable opportunities to enhance diagnostic skills and learn from challenging cases.<\/li><li data-start=\"1267\" data-end=\"1518\"><strong data-start=\"1267\" data-end=\"1301\">Autopsy and Systemic Pathology<\/strong><br data-start=\"1301\" data-end=\"1304\" \/>Students also have the opportunity to observe and participate in autopsy and systemic pathology training through collaboration with the Department of Pathology at Hiroshima University Hospital and nearby hospitals.<\/li><li data-start=\"1520\" data-end=\"1798\"><strong data-start=\"1520\" data-end=\"1550\">Research and Presentations<\/strong><br data-start=\"1550\" data-end=\"1553\" \/>Research projects may include immunohistochemical and genetic analysis of clinical cases. Students are encouraged to present their work at academic conferences\u2014both domestic and international\u2014and publish case reports or original research papers.<\/li><\/ul><hr data-start=\"1800\" data-end=\"1803\" \/><p data-start=\"1855\" data-end=\"1994\">Our program supports students in obtaining the qualifications and certifications necessary to become <strong data-start=\"1956\" data-end=\"1993\">board-certified oral pathologists<\/strong>.<\/p><ul data-start=\"1996\" data-end=\"2921\"><li data-start=\"1996\" data-end=\"2162\"><p data-start=\"1998\" data-end=\"2162\"><strong data-start=\"1998\" data-end=\"2031\">Licensed Autopsy Practitioner<\/strong><br data-start=\"2031\" data-end=\"2034\" \/>\u2003Required for performing autopsies. With sufficient experience, this qualification can often be obtained during graduate school.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2164\" data-end=\"2434\"><p data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2434\"><strong data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2202\">Board-Certified Oral Pathologist<\/strong><br data-start=\"2202\" data-end=\"2205\" \/>\u2003Certified by the Japanese Society of Pathology. After gaining sufficient experience in diagnostic pathology, autopsy, and systemic pathology, students can take the board exam\u2014often as early as the first year after earning a PhD.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2436\" data-end=\"2662\"><p data-start=\"2438\" data-end=\"2662\"><strong data-start=\"2438\" data-end=\"2480\">Board-Certified Dental Cytopathologist<\/strong><br data-start=\"2480\" data-end=\"2483\" \/>\u2003Requires practical experience in oral cytology. While this may be obtained during graduate school, students are encouraged to prioritize oral pathology board certification first.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2664\" data-end=\"2921\"><p data-start=\"2666\" data-end=\"2921\"><strong data-start=\"2666\" data-end=\"2714\">Board-Certified Molecular Pathologist (Oral)<\/strong><br data-start=\"2714\" data-end=\"2717\" \/>\u2003This advanced certification requires prior completion of oral pathology board certification. Becoming a University Faculty Member<\/strong><br data-start=\"419\" data-end=\"422\" \/>You may pursue a career as a faculty member in a university, continuing your work in oral pathology through clinical diagnostics and academic research. This career path requires a well-rounded skill set, including diagnostic, research, teaching, and English communication abilities. It is a core position that plays a key role in advancing the future of oral pathology.<\/p><p data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"1112\"><strong data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"815\">2. Studying Abroad<\/strong><br data-start=\"815\" data-end=\"818\" \/>Studying abroad is a valuable opportunity\u2014ideally undertaken at a younger age when possible. By engaging in research at an international laboratory, you can enhance your research capabilities and global perspective. Many return to Japan afterward to pursue academic positions in oral pathology.<\/p><p data-start=\"1114\" data-end=\"1433\"><strong data-start=\"1114\" data-end=\"1152\">3. Becoming a Full-Time Researcher<\/strong><br data-start=\"1152\" data-end=\"1155\" \/>After gaining international experience, some graduates go on to work at research institutions in Japan or continue their research careers abroad. This path focuses on contributing to science through independent research in molecular pathology, cancer biology, or related fields.<\/p><p data-start=\"1435\" data-end=\"1761\"><strong data-start=\"1435\" data-end=\"1477\">4. Hospital-Based Diagnostic Pathology<\/strong><br data-start=\"1477\" data-end=\"1480\" \/>With appropriate qualifications\u2014especially board certification in oral pathology\u2014it may be possible to join the pathology department of a general hospital and work as a diagnostic oral pathologist. This depends on the institution&#8217;s policies but is a recognized and growing pathway.<\/p><p data-start=\"1763\" data-end=\"2046\"><strong data-start=\"1763\" data-end=\"1797\">5. From the first to fourth year, research is conducted in parallel with training in diagnostic pathology.<br data-start=\"311\" data-end=\"314\" \/>Our lab welcomes not only students specializing in oral pathology, but also those from other clinical backgrounds such as <strong data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"499\">oral and maxillofacial surgery (oral tumor control science)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"520\">orthodontics<\/strong>, creating a diverse and collaborative environment that integrates clinical experience into research.<\/p><p data-start=\"623\" data-end=\"836\">Students engage in hands-on research using a variety of techniques, including <strong data-start=\"701\" data-end=\"727\">cell-based experiments<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"729\" data-end=\"745\">mouse models<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"747\" data-end=\"777\">histopathological analysis<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"783\" data-end=\"803\">omics approaches<\/strong> such as genomics and proteomics.<\/p><p data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"1178\">Regular activities include <strong data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"882\">journal clubs<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"884\" data-end=\"900\">lab meetings<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"939\">one-on-one mentoring sessions<\/strong>, all of which foster deep scientific discussion and individual growth.<br data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1013\" \/>We also hold joint meetings with researchers from other fields, encouraging <strong data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1124\">interdisciplinary collaboration<\/strong> and expanding perspectives for future joint research.<\/p><p data-start=\"1180\" data-end=\"1387\">Students actively present their work at <strong data-start=\"1220\" data-end=\"1253\">academic conferences in Japan<\/strong>, and are routinely encouraged to present and discuss in <strong data-start=\"1310\" data-end=\"1321\">English<\/strong>, with the goal of participating in <strong data-start=\"1357\" data-end=\"1386\">international conferences<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1389\" data-end=\"1767\">Opportunities for <strong data-start=\"1407\" data-end=\"1439\">short-term overseas training<\/strong> (e.g., in the United States or Taiwan) are also available.<br data-start=\"1498\" data-end=\"1501\" \/>Students are encouraged to apply for support programs such as the <strong data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1673\">SPRING Program (Hiroshima University Program for Fostering and Supporting Next-Generation Researchers)<\/strong>.
